How Choosing the Kestrel Font Gave My Small Business a Fresh, Friendly Look

When I first started my little candle-making business from home, I focused mostly on perfecting the scents and ensuring the wax held up well in different temperatures. But as orders started coming in and I began selling at local markets, I realized something was missing. My packaging looked... generic. The labels were readable, sure, but they didn’t feel like *me*. That’s when I discovered Kestrel — a handwritten font that added warmth, personality, and a touch of celebration to every detail of my brand.

What Makes Kestrel Stand Out

Kestrel is a display font with a soft, approachable feel. It’s not overly formal like some serif fonts, nor is it too wild like some decorative scripts. It walks the line between playful and professional, which made it perfect for my candle brand. The lowercase letters have a gentle bounce, and the uppercase letters feel like a warm hug. It’s the kind of font you’d see on a boutique wedding invitation or a cozy bakery window — and that’s exactly the kind of vibe I wanted to bring to my products.

From Labels to Logos: Real Uses for Kestrel

I started by updating my candle jar labels. Instead of using a standard sans serif font, I switched to Kestrel for the scent names. It gave each candle a unique, handmade feel that matched the quality of the product inside. I also used Kestrel in my logo — just the word “Candles & Co.” in a clean layout with a simple icon. The font brought a sense of warmth and trust that I hadn’t been able to achieve before.

Soon after, I redesigned my thank-you cards and social media templates. Kestrel worked beautifully on Instagram posts, especially for quotes or short phrases like “Thank you for lighting up our week!” It also looked great on printed packaging tags and small stickers. Because of its characterful style, I found it worked best for headlines, short phrases, and display text rather than long paragraphs.

Typography Matters — Even for Small Brands

At first, I thought typography was something only big companies needed to worry about. But the truth is, every time a customer sees your brand — whether it's on a business card, a product label, or an Instagram post — they’re forming an impression. Typography plays a huge role in how your brand is perceived. With Kestrel, I noticed people started referring to my candles as “cute” and “thoughtful” — words I hadn’t necessarily used to describe my brand, but that now felt accurate.

Choosing the right font helped me look more polished and consistent across all touchpoints. That consistency built trust. Customers began recognizing my packaging at the market, and followers started commenting on how clean and inviting my Instagram feed looked.

Where Kestrel Works Best — And What to Watch For

Kestrel is a display font, which means it shines brightest when used for visual impact. I used it for my logo, product names, and greeting cards — places where a bit of flair makes a difference. But I learned quickly that it’s not ideal for long blocks of text. On the back of my candle boxes, I paired Kestrel with a simple sans serif font for the ingredient list and safety info. This kept the design cohesive without sacrificing readability.

When working with small labels or mobile screens, I made sure to use Kestrel at a readable size. I also tested it in different colors and backgrounds to ensure it stayed legible. Sometimes, a lighter weight can get lost on textured paper or a busy photo background, so I always checked a few variations before printing or publishing.

Pairing Kestrel with Other Fonts

One of the best parts of working with Kestrel was how easy it was to pair with other fonts. I used it with a clean modern sans serif for body text, which created a nice contrast without clashing. If I wanted a more elegant look — like for a holiday collection — I paired Kestrel with a serif font for a slightly more formal feel. For digital ads or social media stories, I sometimes used Kestrel with another script font to keep the design playful but still professional.

Font pairing is all about balance, and Kestrel gave me the flexibility to experiment. I found that using it alongside more neutral fonts allowed it to stand out without overwhelming the design.

Checking the Fine Print Before You Use a Font

Before I fully committed to using Kestrel across my brand, I made sure to check the licensing. Since I was using it on physical products like candle labels and packaging, I needed a commercial font license that allowed for resale. I also checked what file formats were included — I needed both OTF and TTF to work across different design programs. The Kestrel package included several alternates and ligatures, which let me customize the look a bit more depending on the project.

If you're planning to use Kestrel for multilingual content or international markets, it’s a good idea to check language support. The version I used covered most Western European languages, which was enough for my current audience, but I kept that in mind for future growth.

Small Change, Big Impact

Switching to Kestrel wasn’t a huge investment, but it made a noticeable difference in how my brand was received. Customers started asking if I had a new designer — little did they know, it was just a fresh font choice. My packaging felt more intentional, my social media visuals were more engaging, and my logo finally matched the care I put into every candle.

Whether you're running a small bakery, a skincare brand, or a café, the right font can help your business feel more connected to your audience. Kestrel gave me a way to show my brand’s personality without saying a word — just through the way my name looked on a label or a card.
